Create Your Own Custom Google Gemini Gems
Google gemini has been integrating its google Gemini AI assistant into various apps and devices, from the Pixel 9 to video calls. Typically, the assistant works the same across platforms. However, if you want a more personalized experience, you can customize google Gemini by creating Gems.
The Gems are tailored versions of Gemini that have unique rules and instructions. It is possible to create a Gem that simplifies complex topics or enhances your coding skills.
In addition to Gemini’s features, Gems are more effective for specific tasks because they are focused. You can even upload files to give your Gems extra knowledge beyond Gemini’s standard capabilities.
Gemini Gems are available only for paid Gemini Advanced subscribers, costing $20 per month. No information yet on whether this feature will be available to free users.

Creating new Gems
You can use your Gemini Gems on any device where you’re signed into Google. However, you must use the Gemini web app to create new Gems.
To begin, click on the Gem Manager link on the left side of the screen. If the side panel is hidden, click the three lines in the top left corner to open it.
You’ll find a variety of premade Gems designed for topics like coding, writing, and career advice. These examples showcase the potential of Gemini Gems and how they can be tailored to different tasks. You can click on any Gem to try it out and explore its features. Additionally, a gallery of suggested prompts to help you get started.
If you want to customize a Gem, click the copy button (two overlapping rectangles) to duplicate it and make your edits. Depending on your needs, the Gem’s’ instructions can be altered, its name changed, or its focus refined. Flexible and adaptable, Gems simplify complex topics, facilitate creative writing, and provide detailed career guidance according to your needs.
Experimenting with premade Gems will make the creation of custom Gems even more efficient and intuitive.
The Gemini Gems show you what you can do with coding, writing, and career advice. You can click on any Gem to try it out, explore a gallery of suggested prompts, or duplicate a Gem by clicking the copy button (two overlapping rectangles) to customize it.
When you copy a premade Gem, its setup details appear on the screen. You can edit the instructions, give it a new name, or use the pen-with-a-star button to get Gemini’s help crafting the instructions.
Creating a new Gem is similar to editing one. On the Gem Manager screen, click New Gem, then name it and add instructions. These can specify the Gem’s focus, the tone or style it should use, and any restrictions, such as avoiding tangents.
In the Knowledge section, you can upload your documents. For instance, if your Gem is focused on DNA, you can upload scientific papers. This allows you to create custom Gems tailored to any subject or interest as long as you have reference materials for the AI.
The documents you upload will complement Gemini’s existing training. You can test your Gem using the input box on the right and make adjustments as needed. Once satisfied with how the Gem responds to your prompts, click Save to finalize it.

Chatting with your Google Gemini Gems
You can access any Gems you’ve created from the Gem Manager on the left side of the web interface. They’re also available in the Gemini mobile apps—just ensure the correct Gem is selected before starting a chat.
Using your Gems works much like the leading Gemini AI. You can type your prompts or use the microphone button to speak, and the responses will appear on the screen. You can rate the responses with the thumbs up or down buttons, ask Gemini to try again with the circular arrow button, and view the sources it used below the response.
If Gemini uses documents you’ve uploaded, it will notify you at the top of the response. Click Analysis Complete to see a detailed breakdown. You can also guide your Gem to refer to specific documents for particular answers.
Uploading documents is what makes Gems especially powerful. For example, you could upload an essay about your favorite music and movies to create a Gem with personalized recommendations. This information is saved, so you won’t need to re-enter it each time you use Gemini. Similarly, you could upload your writing samples to teach your Gem to replicate your style.
These customized AI tools are excellent for getting answers in a consistent format or tone. Whether you need a playlist generator or a tool to rewrite text in a specific way, Gems can streamline this without requiring repeated commands.
You can use the + button at the bottom of a Gem chat to enhance your prompts to upload files or images, just as in regular Gemini chats. In Gems, you won’t find the Gemini Live voice interface. It’s onisn’tssible to use voice You’llr type input.
Gems allows you to customize your AI to meet your unique requirements, making it an effective tool for tasks that require precision and focus.
