Google Chrome Update—Bad News for Microsoft Windows

It’s no surprise that Google is putting in a lot of effort to maintain its browser, Google Chrome. Despite pressure from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to limit Chrome’s promotion, the browser has held its ground firmly.

With the latest update, Chrome has once again proven its strength. However, this update has turned out to be bad news for Microsoft and its Windows operating system.

Microsoft’s Attempt to Switch Chrome Users to Edge Browser

Microsoft has been trying for a long time to convince Chrome users to switch to its Edge browser. Through frequent ads and notifications within Windows, Microsoft has been pushing users to adopt Edge. Even Microsoft Edge often appears as a promotional message when you install PC programs.

However, this strategy hasn’t been very successful. Despite that, Microsoft has adopted another, more effective approach. The company is focusing on security to encourage businesses to shift to Edge. Microsoft believes that if people use Edge at their workplaces, they are more likely to continue using it at home as well.

Google Chrome’s Continually Growing Market Share

Although Edge’s market share has grown by 2% annually, reaching 13%, Chrome’s dominance remains far stronger. By the end of 2024, Chrome’s market share witnessed significant growth.

As picked up by Neowin, According to StatCounter’s data, Google Chrome began 2025 with an impressive market share of 66.88%. Chrome reflects an increase of 0.5 points in one month and 1.65 points annually.

This clearly shows that Microsoft’s efforts have failed to impact Chrome’s popularity.

Windows 11 Edge-Preferred Policy

Before the holidays, Microsoft displayed new ads and notifications in Windows 11 to set Edge as the default browser. According to Windows Latest, Microsoft repeatedly prompted users with notifications to make Edge their default browser.

Despite these efforts, this campaign didn’t pose a significant challenge to Chrome. Its features and performance have continued to make it the top choice for users.

Google’s Challenges and User Preferences:

In recent years, Google’s team has faced several issues, including concerns about tracking, cookies, user privacy, security, and the privacy sandbox. However, Chrome users have consistently prioritized its features and performance.

Google trusts its users and has navigated these challenges without facing significant backlash, maintaining its strong position in the market.

New Challenges for Chrome and Microsoft in 2025:

The year 2025 could bring new challenges for both Microsoft and Google Chrome. In the U.S., the antitrust movement remains uncertain. Additionally, a letter has been sent to the European Commission suggesting that Edge should be brought under the DMA regulations and Microsoft should be identified as an entity harming other businesses.

This situation could create fresh challenges for Microsoft, but Google Chrome is likely to maintain its strong position as it continues to prioritize user satisfaction and performance.

Warm Up:

Google Chrome has once again proven that it is the undisputed king of the browser world. Despite all of Microsoft’s efforts, Chrome’s popularity and market share continue to rise.

The competition could become even more interesting in 2025, but for now, Chrome remains firmly maintained in its position.
